Spring – Such a difference

Cracking REtirement Spring such a difference

Spring – I just love it. Less than 2 weeks ago I posted that it didn’t feel like spring. It was a Wednesday, it had been snowing all day, it had been a grey day, it never seemed to get very light. On the Friday, my older son and his wife arrived to go further up north. There was still snow lying in odd places, although the day had been sunny. The garden looked waterlogged and sad.

Then on the Sunday, we ourselves went north by train, we had the most beautiful trip up the West Coast of Scotland. The hills were lovely to look at, with the remnants of the snow on them, we saw some deer and many sheep, even a few highland cows (or hairy coos… ).

We were so fortunate with the weather, it was warm by Scottish standards, 12-15c, the dreaded midges had not yet hatched. (More to come on our trip)

We arrived back just one week later to glorious sunshine, and in the intervening week the garden had come alive. The forsythia has bloomed, the daffodils and other bulbs have come out, and spring really has arrived. The trees and bushes are in bud. Everything feels so much more positive. What a difference a week makes!

Spring makes me feel so much brighter and alive. Yesterday we had a long walk around our favourite fields, the ground is not yet dry, but drying. However we were surprised just how much water is in the Burdiehouse Burn. Normally, small and slow moving, it was very high. The drainage pipe in this photo is normally about 3ft from the water not 1ft.

Today I took this photograph from a different part of the burn, about 2 miles from our house, it is still running high, but not quite so bad.

So what next for this retired person

I have a couple of posts in the pipeline, one on our trip to the Hebrides and the North of Scotland, and also one (or rather four) about taking a few weeks to give myself some space in my life, a clear out mentally, physically and also in my home.

Four weeks of being sensible with food and drink, taking regular exercise, and doing some of the things I keep putting off, but more than anything, looking at the things I really want to spend time on, as opposed to the things I just end up doing, because I can, and it annoys me when other people don’t do them, or do them badly.  In a way a personal blog for 4 weeks, of my day to day life.

Watch this space, and thanks for reading.
